Generally speaking, it takes time to find suitable places to put the file so others can download it. Then you need to choose which ones are best and will be used. Then, uploading large files is no walk in the park either; uploading is usually (with most deals offered by most ISPs, that is) much slower than downloading, and for reference uploading a 500MB file even on some of the best personal (i.e. not including specialized-service or corporate lines) internet connections in europe can take more than three hours. Plus, you have to monitor the upload and check it every few minutes to make sure it doesn't cut, or you'll have to start all over again.

That's only for the actual distribution of the files, it doesn't take into account any compiling, file cleaning, optimizing, last-minute debugging, or anything else that Beghins might be doing to make sure the mod will even work for us.

Granted, this is Beghins' own website, but that doesn't necessarily mean he has the actual server hosting his files somewhere in his basement. He might still have to go through all of the above process to get stuff on his own website. All this to say: Never doubt or question a modmaster's word on his own stuff; there are always good reasons behind things even if they're not being mentioned.

Looking forward to this. It's also been quite a while since I've touched Homeworld2's data files, so I'm also hoping to take a look into the guts of the thing after a bit of testing and see if I can find one or two little things to fix.
Beghins - Tue Dec 07, 2010 11:32 am
Post subject:
No, cause I'm at job, Complex has a dedicated server and the upload is done by a 100Mega optic fibre from my house, it's an issue of few seconds but the beta 0.1 needs still few fixing else it will be more unstable then you imagine, but I hope not so, anyway 11-12 hours and it will be on.

Changelogs are convenience features for release products Wink

Since you're here to test the mod (or you wouldn't be waiting on a beta download version), you shouldn't need a changelog; you're going to be exploring, fiddling, and messing around with every single part of it anyways, to make sure that both everything new and everything old work (or still work) well on their own and with eachother interacting.

Then again, that's what professional testers are supposed to be doing. I sometimes take things a bit too seriously on these matters.

Of course, I'm just playing devil's advocate and being an ass because I have nothing better to do while waiting for this to come out.

DaFranker is abit on the mark. Everything should be tested thoroughly. Provide whatever errors you get and as much detail should be a given. With how old HW2 is there any merit in giving system specs in reports since practically everything can run HW2? I know Complex is a different beast however. Later tests perhaps there will be more hand holding and pointing out of what should be focused on. Perhaps some format for bug write ups? Certain details you want minimum in said write ups?

I hope this proves sufficient to argue the fact that this thread is not here only to report bugs. It seems to me that this was intended as a general discussion not only on the contents of the testing (i.e. bugs and glitches) but also on the manner, context and method of the testing, and so far I would dare say that that's pretty much what's been going on here.

I strongly support DJ Die's proposal of keeping reports at least in separate threads, though an actual dedicated bug-tracking system such as mantis would be even better. Having all bug-reporting condensed to a single thread tends to make all testers report the same two or three bugs and prevent them from focusing on more important or urgent parts that actually do need testing and debugging, mostly by hampering (or downright preventing) the natural 'division of labor' that otherwise occurs in community efforts like these.

I need some help, please.
I managed to build a .big file of your sourcecode, using modpackager of your tool package. i added every folder and file, built the .big and wrote a batch file:
Code:

@Homeworld2.exe -mod complex800.big -overridebigfile -hardwarecursor

just as stated in the first posting.

homeworld starts i see the classic game and when trying to start a new game, no complex options are visible. I think it simply ignores the complex800 bigfile, so i took a look into the previous bigfile, complex744.big and it looks almost the same as the file i created. folder and files, called just like in your source code. checking the archive with modpackager returned the archive to be ok.

any suggestion?

did you add "-overidebigfile" at the end of your shortcut properties?
SirTazel - Thu Dec 09, 2010 1:31 am

i'm not launching the game via a shortcut. i wrote a batch file which resides in the homeworld/bin/release path. i have posted the command in my reply above.
i use the same kind of batch file for the previous version of complex and this works perfect.

true, there is no exact reason why to use a batch file for this instead of using a shortcut. just say, i dont like spreading shortcuts all over my computer.

/edit: now i made a shortcut for testing, added the command switches, same behaviour.

I think i was facing the same Problem than Hagen.

How should i tell homeworld to use the Files from the Zip? Just placing them with all the directories in the data directory?

it was unclear to me what happens if using or not using the command switch "-overridebigfiles". does it tell the exe to ignore the original bigfiles? doesnt seem so.

this evening i will test both:
removing the "-overridebigfiles" while telling to use the bigfile
removing the "-mod", adding "-overridebigfiles" and placing the unzipped files in the data folder.

really makes sense now, i think. why should i tell to use the bigfile and in the same second tell the game to ignore bigfiles. stupid me.

i will repeat what worked.

safoolfool, look in .\Data\leveldata\multiplayer\deathmatchX.lua - those files control gametypes and their properties and settings, and essentially are the ones that 'load' all the complex features when the match begins. deathmatch.lua (without any numbers) is the one that controls the Complex Custom gamemode, which is probably the one you want. Other gamemodes are spread out in the other files, and you'll have to look in them one by one to know which is which.

To make your life easy, simply look for a block that looks somewhat like this (don't mind the text next to tooltip =, I'm proofwriting most of the text and descriptions for the menus in my version at the moment) :
Code:
---AUTO SAVE--------------------------
  {
   name = "autosave",
   locName = "Auto Save",
   tooltip = "THIS SETTING CONTROLS THE FREQUENCY OF AUTOMATIC GAME SAVES (PLAYER VS CPU ONLY) (Default: Disabled)",
   default = 0,
   visible = 1,
   choices =
   {
    "Disabled",  "0",
    "Every 5 Years",  "5",
    "Every 10 Years",  "10",
    "Every 15 Years",  "15",
   },
 },

Simply change one of the options at the bottom (or add one) to change how often autosaves happen. Yes, each 'option' is actually two parameters in an array - this is normal and intended, for game settings.
safoolfool - Fri Dec 10, 2010 8:43 am
Post subject:
That didn't seem to work for me, but I only tested it by changing the "5" after "Every 5 Years" to "1" and letting it run into year 2, and it didn't save.
I dunno about autosave, but many other settings get reinterpreted elsewhere, usually in the oninit file. For example, deathmatch sets choosing rank remuneration on "maximum" (the text in the dropdown) to make the variable (what the game is looking at) "rankremuneration" have value "4". Then oninit makes that value into 3, which is what's finally applied (multiplied by the base remuneration). This means changing it in deathmatch to 10 will make oninit confused: oninit takes the value and does stuff for 0,1,2,3,4,5, and "else", so 10 gets treated as "else", which makes it into 2, the default. Changing oninit, however, has the desired effect.
i.e. changing the lines in oninit
elseif rankremuneration == 4 then
rankremuneration = 3
to
elseif rankremuneration == 4 then
rankremuneration = 10

makes the remuneration in game 10x the base (this I've done, and it has worked).

My guess is there's something taking the autosave variable generated in deathmatch and saying
if autosave == 0 then don't save
elseif autosave == 5 then save every 5 years
elseif autosave == 10 then save every 10 years
elseif autosave == 15 then save every 15 years
else don't save
so changing the deathmatch value to 1 (or anything other than 0,5,10,15) causes it to go to the "else" line, similar to how everything else works.

Then again, gametime.lua has
---Save game
if numPlayerhuman == 1 then
cyclesave = cyclesave + 1
if cyclesave == autosave then
Rule_AddInterval("salvataggio", 10)
end
end
and oninit has nothing talking about autosave, so either something is readjusting autosave between deathmatch and gametime, or that line in gametime doesn't mean what I think it does, or autosaving isn't working well (I dunno, the game has yet to last into the 5th year without crashing).

No biggie though, I'll just manually save every year.
DaFranker - Fri Dec 10, 2010 3:12 pm
Post subject:
In that gametime.lua block, the Rule_AddInterval() call actually tells the game to launch the "salvataggio" function every 10 units of time, if I'm not mistaken. What those units actually are I don't know exactly, but they could easily be ten seconds or ten gameframes. Not a big deal anyway and fairly easy to find if we really want to know. Anyway, here's what this "salvataggio" function does:
Code:
function salvataggio()
  if lastrList[Universe_CurrentPlayer() + 1] == -1 then   --evita che il salvataggio arrivi durante la cinematica
    FE_SaveGameScreen()
    cyclesave = 0
    Rule_Remove("salvataggio")
  end
end

So really, the script directly checks in the earlier code whether cyclesave = autosave, if yes save the game and reset the cyclesave counter.

EDIT: Oh, and to those having trouble running the mod, please remember that the command line parameter is "-overrideBigFile", not "-overridebigfile". This is case-sensitive, so entering the parameter with lowercase characters will not work.
S31-Syntax - Fri Dec 10, 2010 6:40 pm
Post subject:
Maybe its just that I'm running it through wine... but the command line switch is NOT case sensitive on my end. but no then again that is unrelated, my friend is also running the beta on windows and his switch is also lowercase. So no, its not case sensitive.

That seems strange though since BASH is always case sensitive.
DaFranker - Sat Dec 11, 2010 6:19 am
Post subject:
Huh. That's odd. In all the documentation I've seen it says it's case-sensitive, and I've tried it earlier and indeed, entering -overridebigfile instead of -overrideBigFile in my shortcut does not work. I also get the same case-sensitivity issue with many other flags, such as -forceLAN or even .big filenames using the -mod flag (i.e. if I have a .big file named "Complex7.big", then entering "-mod complex7.big" will not work, it absolutely has to be "-mod Complex7.big").

It might be an issue of how my shortcut data is formatted though. So yeah, people know that their setup is not case-sensitive, they shouldn't take chances and use proper formatting.

-> Start game
-> Loading xxxx
-> Map appears for 1 second
-> Full crash back to desktop

I'm using Win7 x64.

Does anybody else have this problem?

I have the same problem.
But it is not associated with the mod.
This happened with me and with other modes.
Try to completely reinstall the game

If you need to, you could download a file accelerator. DAP works good for me. Before I got speeds around 60KB/sec, after, in excess of 300KB/sec. It works well.

well... sorry then... thought i was helping Rolling Eyes
my goal was to remove some load from the original file server and help a bit in it's distribution for the complex comunity.
Also, the official download link is hotlinkable... so it won't help a lot if you are to prevent the distribution of the beta outside.

Anyway, i'll remove it right away from my megaupload account (you can be sure that the link i posted above was only on this forum and has not been posted/sent anywhere else), i can still re upload it if i'm permitted to do so (or upload yourself to your own account if you don't trust me Razz )

lil' edit : the only rule about posting the file somewhere else was this one

-don't post the download link on external web sites or forum threads, the beta is only for registered members and must be downloaded only from this forum section;

What i did was posting it on megaupload (files uploaded there are hidden, there's no file browser on megaupload), then i posted the link here (so the mod is still downloaded only from this forum section).
Maybe the rule was a bit ambiguous, or my english limited (not my native language Rolling Eyes ) but i don't think i broke any rule here.

Again, as i don't want to start a war on this thread, the file has been removed from megaupload.

Mothership laser cannon only has worked once or twice. Has not worked since upgrading in Research. Select Laser Cannon option, target ship and press z. No response under different scenarios. Power Station has rating of between 30 - 44 after several upgrades. I am beginning to like the concept of the Power Station.

System: MacPro quad Xeon running Windows XP SP2 with Boot Camp ver. 3.2
Game play fairly smooth.

Is the beta still incompatible with the Macintosh system? The lua coding for HW2 in Mac is reluctant to actively bump around a data set, and prefers to have one nice, clean file containing everything it needs to work. Both beta 1 and 2 have crashed upon starting a 2 player skirmish with both races set to Hiigaran and video quality set to as low as possible. I even tried creating whole new profiles to play, and none of these techniques worked. However, I've taken a liking to keeping the badges folder in my data set, as it carries over to any .big file I use, even when playing normal HW2!

Apologies for the lengthy post; I'm just so excited to see that an amazing game like this still has such a dedicated development team working on it! Please continue your amazing work for the enjoyment of all strategic thinkers in the modern world.

As far as I know it is incompatible. Macability would be added once beta testing is complete. Have you tried launching the c8 beta using modrunner1.2? It handles non .big mods well. I play on a Mac through Parallels.

Alas, I used to have modrunner, but I switched to HW2 Launcher v0.5.9, since it directly allows for the addition of Terminal commands specifc to each .big file on its list, and lets you place in those arguments without a .big attached on. Would it really make a difference which one I used? Also, would it help to have the last playable .big version of Complex active while I use the beta data (hah, that rhymes!)?
ALC - Mon Jan 03, 2011 12:44 am
Post subject:
You shouldn't need any .big file as all of the necessary data is in the download.
If the c8 beta is playable on OSX, then HW2 Launcher should be able to launch it. It shouldn't make any difference which mod launcher you use.

I haven't actually tried the c8 beta on Mac, so I will try it and see if it works. It'd be nice to know.

@Daveworld

Sorry, I should have noticed the G5 bit earlier.
The PC (and thus the beta) version of Complex 8 will not work on a non-intel Mac as far as I know. Your only option would be to try and run it through Virtual PC, though I think that would be too slow to run the game effectively.

One thing you could try would be to remove all of the Complex maps from the mod and attempt to run it with the ordinary HW maps only. I think that this will not work, but I would try it anyway just to see.

You'll be waiting for a long time for HW3, and if it did come out it probably would require new hardware!

The release versions of Complex have always had a Mac-friendly file, so once testing is over it's likely that there will be a Mac version of c8.

Welcome to the Forum.

There is no release date for the mod as yet. And there will be a few more betas first.

To recap on running the beta:
you need to make a back up of your Data folder for Homeworld 2 and put the contents of the beta into your Data folder.

You then need to duplicate your desktop shortcut and in its properties change the path in the duplicate to this:

-mod Complex692.big -hardwarecursor -overridebigfile
(you are adding -overridebigfile to what is there already).
This tells the shortcut to take note of what is outside the .big file.
The game will look at what is int he Data folder you have created and use that in place of the equivalent in the .big file. anything you haven't moded will load from the .big

Double click on the duplicated shortcut to launch the beta.

EDIT: Beta 5 is now available — so lock 'n' load Very Happy

Common issue - make sure that where the normal "race" selection box should be for each player, that you select something. Even if its invisible, its there - its invisibe because the last time you played that slot was used as the Vaygr, and they are not enabled yet so the game doesn't know what to do, basically. Just find it/them, select Hiigarans, and move on.

It should work after that.

Sad I can't get it to work.
I cleared the C:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\Data Folder as Beghins explained in his first post here. Then I copied all the files I downloaded and unpacked from the .rar archive in there. And added that thing to my command line so that it now sais:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -mod Complex744.big -overridebigfile -hardwarecursor 1680 -h 1050

When I double click the Complex Shortcut just nothing happens. I see the that sandglass for a quater of a second than its gone and nothing further happens Sad
I obviously did something wrong. Mine if you help me out here? Smile
Thanks

// Because even the normal Homeworld 2 wouldn't start again I killed HW2 from my HD and reinstalled and patched it. Then installed Complex Mod and could run that either -__- It seems to be unhappy with me using 64bit Windows 7.
This is kinda annoying^^

Woah, been playing on carnage for a few hours, 4 players, 2 vaygr and 2 hiigarans (I'm a vaygr), and there's NO LAG! OMFG! What'd you do beghins? You witch doctor. Oh, yeah, and the weapons station is still annoying XD

Edit: Well, it does lag a bit, but it is no where near as bad as it usually is, and the models didn't turn into ugly blocky things. Maybe the Vaygr cause less graphical problems.

Edit Edit: Nm, they finally went blocky, lag is still not as bad though

Edit of the edit of the edit: Really?... Just the geometry scaling?... I really wish I had known that sooner... Also, played a different map with Hiigarans, it lagged, but I think it's more of a 'time-passing so more stuff shows up on screen' since the match for the Hiigarans is taking a lot longer.

Yes he did.

HGS have to many things already and its geting anoing to play. V6 was awesome but now i think he is just droping new ideas in and not thinks about balance. I love vaygr because its still simple forward what you need to do.

The best thing to do for me now is play Vaygr vs Vaygr and Hgs vs Hgs, its a good way to learn and not be mad by unbalance issues.

I have download the last version of the mod (8.07 beta) and i have installed as usually: i download it to a folder in my desktop, copy to the data folder and write on the desktop´s shortcut: -overridebigfile -hardwarecursor.

My os is windows vista 32 bits with service pack 2. I play without whe mod and homeworld 2 works perfect with and without the update to 1.1. I have read that windows vista and homeworld 2 have many problems with dep (Data Execution Prevention). I turn off but i have the same problem.

Welcome to the Forum.
To play multiplayer you need to make sure that all the players are using the exact same version of the mod, beta0.7 in this case.
If you find that multiplayer doesn't work when the above is satisfied then you could post the fact as a possible bug in the Beta0.7 Bug list.

Er, have you bought a Mac then Kookie?!

Have a look in the Technical thread. There are several ways to run it on a Mac.
Beta 8 doesn't have a Mac version as such, but it can be run on a Mac.

I play it on a Mac using Parallels.

Well I have a pretty good Windows PC and a MacBook I use at university and stuff.
And I'm visiting my brother right now so I only have my laptop with me. And I kinda wanna play Complex 8 right now XD

Hello, my name is Kon (Hello Kon). And I'm a Complexaholic... XD

Not sure how long it takes to set HW 2 up to run natively on the Mac.

Hmm, Kon. Perhaps it would be better to chill for a while and maybe even read a (paper) book or something Wink

I have been waiting for the final release of Complex 8. I've played 7.4 for a long time. I deceided to try my luck with the beta version of Complex 8. I followed the instructions. I downloaded the beta version, I extracted it to my HW2 data file after making sure I deleted all mod leaving only the animatics and big files. In my HW2 shortcut I type in at the end of my cmd line overridebig file - hardwarecursor. However as much as I try the game keeps reverting the original HW2 game and not to complex. my rig runs on window 7/64 bit. I have the lastest drives for my graphic card and I backed up my previous settings. Can someone advise me as to what I am doing wrong.
Walkop2011 - Mon Apr 25, 2011 2:59 pm
Post subject:
Your problem is a simple one. Your shortcut should read this: -overridebigfile
Not this: -overridebig file
That is likely your problem; there can't be a space in between the words.

Hope that helps!

Post subject: HELP WITH INSTALLATION
Sorry about the typing mistake. You are right there should not be any space between overidebig and file. However, this is what was in my command line: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -w 1680 -h 1050 -overridebigfile -hardwarecursor. I have been experimenting with different ways in trying to resolve this problem. But I have not been able to solve it. I will continue to see if I made an error in installation. I'm no expert, but I have followed all the instructions and will try everything from the begining. Again if anyone can advise me as to what I am doing wrong I will be greatly appreciative.

P.S. This is what's in my HW2 data file: Animatics, Complex8beta08,English.big,Englishspeech.big, Homeworld2.big, Music.big

A .... paper...book? Not with a screen? XD
Yea, well I'm already headed home. I might reinstall Windows 7 on my MBP just in case something like this happens again Razz
Because there is a pretty good way to get 7.44 working on mac. With the mac version of the game and a Mod launcher that does it's job quite well. All you need is the .big file.

Anyway, enough off topic for today. Better go and enjoy the crowded train for a while XD

Surely you have extracted the zip file?

I've been successfully running every beta8 but this latest 08 version just CTDs right after when trying to load the intro-movie... I can just ever so briefly see the main menu when HW2 quits on me. New AMD 11.4 drivers installed... maybe a crux of the problem.

Hi AAltomar, thank you for your concern I was able to get some help as to what I was doing wrong. It seems that I was not extracting my files correctly into the HW2 data file. Once I saw where I went wrong I was able to correct my mistake. The beta 08 version of complex is now working fine. However, not to take anything away from the mod, and I know this is only a beta version, this version runs slow. At least slower than the previous complex version. I guess I just have to wait for the completed finish version to make a real judgement call.
ALC - Fri Apr 29, 2011 10:34 pm

@mperez
Actually, if it is running slower than the previous beta version it would be worth posting this in the bug thread along with your computer's set up OS etc and gampelay settings and maps, in case it is a problem that the Team is not aware of. We are nearing the end of the beta testing now and things ought to be coming together.

Reporting back. I seemingly didn't do anything differently, but now I've got the game back up and running. Catlyst 11.4. drivers were not the culpirt. Enabling vsync seemed to crash the game, so I forced it through drivers and left it off in-game. Deleting the playercfg.lua enabled me to start the game without a CTD and try new settings.

The first few times I tried running the vanilla game I couldn't pan at all without a huge lag. Going into tactical view was smooth and the units moved smoothly, but panning was impossible. For some reason after few tries it switched back to smooth (maybe it was the forced vsync via drivers dunno...). In any case, whatever problem I had wasn't because of Complex beta. Cool

Yes - in the next beta, we are planning to finalize work on the text files to incorporate many fixes for grammar that ALC and I have been working on. Is that what you are refferring to?

I don't actually have the finallized text files themselves, but I have quite a few of the descriptions for Hiigaran ships in a format that can be simply cut-and-pasted into the build files. You could translate that in the same way as you do now, then cut-and-paste your translated edition into the build files. However, as of now I've only converted a certain amount of my changes (Utility ships, fighters, corvettes, and frigates) to the cut-and-paste format; but I am rewriting all of my changes to the cut-paste style, so I hope to have the rest of the Hiigaran ship descriptions done fairly soon. If you're wondering where these changes are, they're in my first post at the

The English versions in the Corrected Typos thread are the final versions.
There will be very few changes after these and those changes are likely to be only in and punctuation or spelling mistakes which got missed first time round.

Post subject: Complex8
Buongiorno!
Come posso fare?

Mille grazie....

Welcome to the forum.
You are more likely to get a response if you post your query in English.

Translation, via google translate:
I write (though in Italian) because with the beta 0.7 and 0.8 of the mod complex8 I have a big problem.
When you first install the 0.7 version and everything works all right.
I had to reinstall the operating system and reinstalled the mod (including the patch 1.1 from the original game), the problems began.
The computer AI does not react, we only gather resources allocated at the beginning with collectors but does not evolve and he is not nothing.
The same problem with the last version I just downloaded.
This is the only major problem that reflected in the game as the rest, music and graphics, everything works fine.
I wonder why everything worked the first time and at high levels the computer opponent was an annoying, but now nothing.
How can I do?

EDIT:
Non reaction by the computer AI is generally due to how the game settings at the start are arranges. Try setting AI aids to maximum and the difficulty to normal. This should give the AI more RUs faster.

The original game works fine and I ended up with no system problem.
Version 7.4.4 works fine and without errors.

I tried reinstalling everything but to no avail.
It can depend on my Italian version of the game and its patch on??

Homeworld patched to latest version

1. I followed the instructions on adding the big file to the shortcut - game starts as default, no Complex.

2. If I change any Video options the game crashes to desktop. I was able to change resolution using the PLAYERCFG file but I cannot turn off geometry scaling. If I access the Video tab at all not even change anything and then try to go into another tab I get a CTD.

I tried to attach my error log but got "The Extension txt is not allowed"

Sad

Hmmm...that's a very strange issue indeed! It doesn't seem like a Complex problem; so I suggest ruling something out first.

Update your video drivers. It fixed quite a few CTD (or not even opening) problems for me.

If that's ruled out, then we can move on the other issues.

You are funny - been here since 2008 but thanks for another welcome!

Any how the game plays - I spent an hour or so on the single player campaign. However I cannot change any of the video settings. I used the PLAYERCFG file and changed some but I do not know exactly what changing a 0 (zero) to a 1 will do or if maybe it should be a 4. Does that make sense?

I was even able to change the game rez to match my screen rez of 1600 x 1050 fine.

So again, my problems are CTD when making any in-game video changes and Complex does not start only the vanilla HW2.

Please confirm the proper location of the BIG file and what my shortcut Target path should look like. This is how it looks now:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -overridebigfile -hardwarecursor

THANKS!

Try setting your target line to look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -overridebigfile -hardwarecursor -w 1600 -h 1050
The command switches -w & -h set the width and height of the resolution, respectively.
Text files themselves aren't allowed as attachments; Ctrl+C¹ the logfile from a text editor, then stick it in some spoiler tags like this:
Code:
[spoiler]Your log file here[/spoiler]

¹Unless your log file is greater than 100 kb; if it is, then stick it in a *.zip (and only a *.zip file) file and attach it to a post.

Quote:
Please confirm the proper location of the BIG file and what my shortcut Target path should look like. This is how it looks now:
*.big files (once one for Complex 8 is made) will go in the data directory, with all the default game *.big files (Homeworld2.big, english.big, etc...) To use such a mod, use the command line switch:
-mod <modName>.big
to use multiple mods separate the names with a semicolon:
-mod <modName1>.big; <modName2>.big

Extract the contents of the Complex zip file to the \data\ directory of the Homeworld 2 installation folder (Vista: \Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\data\ or the Virtual store equivalent would work as well; <USERNAME>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Sierra\Homeworld2\data\

Your data folder should contain the following folders:

It should also have the original *.big files from vanilla Homeworld 2.

I'm on a mac, so I haven't been able to beta this (it crashes every time I start a battle) However, I've heard that everything is looking good so far. Do you know if when we'll be ables to get this on a mac, or how to make a .big file?
Sorry if it sounds like I'm whining, I'm just curious.

The PC version of the mod will not run on a Mac, even as a .big
I am on a Mac also but I play Complex through Parallels — I had to buy a PC version of the game for this though, cheap enough on ebay.
However it is possible to run the PC version of the game natively on OSX on an Intel Mac, there is a thread on how to do it in the technical section, here:

In the past a Mac version has been created of the final release .big of each version of Complex.
However, maps with planets have not worked on Macs before, so if you launch a game involving one of these maps it will crash.

One option you could try for running the beta would be to try and launch its Data folder using Mod Runner 1.2. I doubt this would work thoug.

Figured out I need to unzip the contents into the /data folder - this was not clear in the OP.

Here I pasted my Hw2.log. While I got Complex to 2 player setup options as soon as I click start game it crashes to desktop. Hopefully someone can decipher the log and explain why the vanilla HW2 works fine sans any video option adjustments but Complex crashes out of the gate.

Thanks.

Okay I gave it a reasonable whirl. Did a fresh install just now on a different computer (Alienware M17x SLI GTX 285) and it also CTD. Did another install w/o Complex and the vanilla HW2 ran fine.

It seems to be having an issue trying to load a research file for the Invalid race; which is reasonable, because there is no such file, and never was, even for the vanilla Homeworld. Were all the open player slots set to a valid race (Hiigaran or Vaygr)?

I set both to Hiigaran. The progress bar gets to about half way and it takes a dump. I also, at least on the laptop, get the AGP video card warnings, which is kinda annoying (checkbox does not stop the warning) and funny.

Hi guys. Just downloaded and installed Complex 8 beta, the last version (0.9). Ummm... I followed the instructions but the game CTDs when I start a skirmish game. It loads up about 1/3 and before the match even starts it crashes. Any solutions? I'm on Win7 64 bit, quad-core processor, 4 gigs of ram and a 512mb GPU. All versions played well until now (HW2, earlier versions of Complex).

One thing: when I was unpacking the zipped version of Complex, there were several errors with "corrupted files". Maybe this has something to do with my issues? Thanks in advance...

Probably. Corrupted files in a zip file are typically skipped over when everything is being uncompressed. So the game is probably missing several key files. What did the Hw2.log file say?

And did you not use a download manager?

Try setting all the players to playable race (Hiigaran or Vaygr); it might be trying to treat one of the closed slots as an AI race (for some odd reason.)

I didn't use a download manager, I just downloaded directly via Chrome. Hmm. I had the REARM mod installed via Desura first, and the app had some troubles, but I deleted all REARM files from the "hw2/data" folder, did everything correctly.

I'll give it another shot on a clean install or something... Sad By the way, how does one UNINSTALL Complex 8.0.9?

@bills6693: A few years ago, downloading a file wouldn't typically be interrupted by other traffic, since file sizes were smaller and internet traffic was less hectic; but with the Internet being such a busy place nowadays and large files frequently being downloaded, connections needed to become more fluid than they used to be. Nowadays, an established connection that has been active for a while might be closed to make room for a newer one (interrupting the download of a large file.) A download manager keeps the connection open by renewing that connection frequently.

At least so I've been led to believe.

I had an idea... Can you make an option on the cruisers and other capital ships to gain exp points? Because you can't exp a ship to max due to the constant fight with the enemies.

Maybe you could increase the Officier max pop and make docking on stations faster.

And btw the hiigaran battleships are too strong or have an orversized attack range. With 4 battleships i destroyed 12 heavy destroyers and 3 battlecruisers.

They're powerful, and they have a very high range with the 6x Kinetic Turrets. Plus it's four Battleships in one spot, but had you let the Battlecruisers get close you'd probably lose at least two of them literally in the blink of an eye.

Experience points grow on ships whether or not they are used in combat.

I don't think that 4 BBs being able to destroy 12 DDs and 3 BCs is overpowering. A BB is vastly superiour to a DD or a BC.

Is this one of those things where there is a 'defence module' and so the max hull of all ships increases, but their actual hp does not, so it appears they have taken damage (actually they have not, but their hp has stayed the same as before). Over time it 'repairs'... can that be fixed tho please?

I think that your issue is due to the fact that the Drive Module does not affect the "Speed" indicator at the bottom of the screen, even though it actually does have an effect on the ships speed. Its an issue with that indicator itself, I think.

I've personally noticed this as well; its quite annoying at times.

Post subject: CTD with complex 8 Beta 0.9
OK, first off I thought a log file was produced automatically. However I can't find a log file in the appropriate folder. Is there a switch or something for that? I tried -log just incase, no luck.

I am getting the error that a few others have cited previously. However the various fixes they used (re-unzipping, re-downloading, even re-installing HW2) haven't worked. I still get a CTD when I attempt to start a game. I've tried maps with and without planets, just incase and all player entries seem to be with AIs.

I've started to DL the file for a third time but I don't think it will do any good. Out of interest I've tried with and without a DL manager, and using the first link, then the mega upload link. Both give same results.

Hopefully someone can assist. I loved Complex 7 and played it a lot. Keep up the good work (and here's hoping I can get to try it!)

If you are using Vista, then you'll have to look for a hidden folder call AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ Followed by whatever pathname HW2 was installed to.

Then the other log file... if that's needed.
The crash log is typically a logfile of last resort; and is really only useful if something non-script related going wrong (like a bad mesh/texture/etc...)

No, not a mac. AMD PC using XP.
I've messed around with other games a fair bit but haven't dealt with HW's errors, logs etc (Though I did some work on HW1 modding a LOOOOONG time ago. Contributed to Movements of Fire & Shadow mod and a couple of others)
I noticed the two errors, one the english folder missing in the locale (non-fatal) and the script one you mentioned. Why would having a Mac force it to look in that location on game start? I would have thought the rule set would have been the same for both, wouldn't it? Eh, what do I know! Smile

This is the fatal error; I'm not sure why it is even possible, since the only reason I can find for there to actually be a Invalid race is to occupy the list index location of 0. Aside from this, it doesn't do anything else. I suppose you could create a new text file put:
Code:
research = {}

in it, and then save it (as research.lua) to a new directory in the scripts\building and research\Invalid\ folder; but I doubt that this will completely solve the problem.

HW2 operates slightly differently on Macs; namely that it won't run based on the override files. Macs require a *.big file, as well as a few other tweaks.

EDIT:
OK, did a quick check on a few other maps and then found the problem. Some above (I forget who) mentioned that AI's were 'unselected' and that was causing a problem. I checked the left side for the flags and (it's been over a year since I played homeworld 2) I forgot that there was supposed to be a tag under the 'race' heading. After selecting for each race I've got at least one map to work (the first on the list) and I'll try a few others just to make sure it's all up and running. So far looks good.

Thanks again for assisting with this

OK, update. Some maps work others don't. For some reason Earth & Mars map doesn't work, but Jupiter does. I would have thought the sun effects would have made that one more finicky. Hmmm. At some of it is working now. Thanks again for the assist

Post subject: Crash Upon Startup
Hello Community,

Perhaps I am just missing something obvious,

I have been quiet on the fourms, but have followed complex for several years now,

but on to my issue,

I have a windows 7, 64 bit OS,
and upon startup of the beta my screen goes black, where I can see the HW cursor, then it flashes back to the desktop with no error message.

Is this a common problem that has a fix?

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

Sagyxil - Wed Aug 03, 2011 4:37 pm
Post subject:
@ricasmster:
If you mean the beta; then you need to extract the contents of the zip file to Data folder of where ever you installed Homeworld 2. If you have another non-big filed mod installed; it would be wise to uninstall it before extracting Complex.

Assuming you are using Windows, then you'll need to either copy the shortcut you use to run Homeworld 2 (either modded or un-modded) or create a new shortcut for it.
Once you have your copy/new shortcut, go to the shortcut's properties;
Go to the "Shortcut" tab.
To the right of the label, that says "Target:", there should be a white text box.
In this box type (including the quotation marks)
"<INSTALLATIONPATHNAME>Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -overrideBigFile
where <INSTALLATIONPATHNAME> is the full path (like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\" if you use Vista 64-bit) of where you installed Homeworld 2.

Checked Again. All the same. I downloaded Complex 8 Beta 9 from megaupload (link in first post). Hiigaran standard shipyard can't dock with Mohership, Research Station & etc. And there is no button for purchasing Mothership Battle Asset.

I built all ships and all modules available, researched all researches and still and didn't found "Mothership Battle Asset" nor on it's standard place, nor in subsystems tab, where I ordering construction of Rapid Sweeper Set...

To elaborate a bit on Kitkun's statement; the Hiigarans have three types of shipyards; Normal (without the docking clamps), Gujking and Battle Shipyards. The one that can build the Assets is the Gujking Shipyard, and you'll need to dock all the support stations and Mothership to it to do so.

Just downloaded beta 8.09 and whilst i can get into the game i am unable to load a v's cpu game. The screen comes up with a load bar and gets to about 33% and then i get a CTD.

I have loaded up a Single Player campaign fine today (without complex) so i don't think it's the game it's self.

i have a log here which seems to suggest that it is crashing loading the research tree?

Planets can't build anything at the moment, so the lack of planetary upgrades is understandable. However, the lack of the Gujking and Mothership Battle Assets is a bit odd (though if you are missing the Gujking Shipyard, then it is also understandable.)
What do you mean by "orbital station upgrades"?
Baudolino - Sat Sep 03, 2011 8:57 pm

orbital station had civilian barrack subsystem upgrades for increased population cap
planets had the same.

the mods for planets and orbital stations are still in the subsystem folder, but their refences have been cut from all relevant files- ship files, build, population etc...

This is/was only partially true. Vaygr AI players would apparently just instantly research things, which was probably the reason I threw my hands up and shouted bad words at my computer when five minutes in I get the "Store 10000 RUs accomplished by Player #", leaving me to wonder WTF just happened that they could store that much that fast.

If you rename the .exe file with the extension .zip and then unzip it with Stuffit expander it ought to open the file for you and give you a folder of the contents.
Be sure that it is Stuffit expander that does the work as OSX's own built in zip extractor may not work. Also, you could use 'unzip' command in Terminal, in which case you wouldn't need to rename the .exe file.

Sorry, but no. The game is even imba with all the changes we made.
I have no idea why you would want to turn the DN into a battleship of doom filled with almost all time of weaponry. It has to be single role. It is vaygr, not hiigaran.
I'm not meaning to be rude, but being ready is very relative here.
The crashes are gone, and i appreciate that a lot, you have done great work with that.
However please ask opinions about making such changes to the already strong ships.
One such change could mess up all the work we have done to a achieve balance.
Now we use Walkop's DN modifications, that means, that it's only weapon is the main Ion beam.
Posting thread for bugs.

cdnr1- This is what I did, extract the files to your desktop and then select all the files and drag them to your homeworld 2 data folder, ie for me c drive program files x86 sierra homeworld 2 data and put them there. Then fix your shortcut for the beta launcher ie right click properties go to target and add -overridebig

This should help ya out.

I get an error when i try to download it, it says:

"Downloads\data.zip could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator."

I've tried twice, and each time about 4 hours in ( out of 8 hours. its slow, but that I can live with) it stops and gives me this error.
I may be new to the forums, but I genuinely want to help test this fantastic mod, what you have so far is nothing short of absolutely amazing, and the way in which ideas are discussed and incorporated is inspirational.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me.

that is most probably a network error due to your connection. often this error occurs when your connection with the server is truncated for some reason, and since the server has a short timeout timer before it closes the connection, when your browser tries to restart the download the server refuses since your connection has expired. The cause could be a bad connection, or something wrong with your firewall/antivirus/internet provider. At least, this was the case when i usually got this type of error, but the fact you have a connection so slow (and the fact you are an ocean away from the server) imho is the most probable cause. Unfortunately if it's this you can only try until you get lucky and the connection holds up, maybe at night when traffic is lower.

meanwhile i'll see if we can do something to help you work around the problem.

First post here, been following this game for a couple of years now. You guys are awesome!

Just a quick question, is it at all possible to routinely upload new files to a mirror? Because the homeworldcomplex.com server is slow as hell, at least for me. Sitting here wanting to able to play the beta RIGHT NOW but having to wait an hour and half because of the 100 KB/sec average download rate is, to be frank, painful.
CJCord - Thu Jan 05, 2012 12:36 pm
Post subject:
for some of the last updates there was an external mirror, but i think the "authorities" have to do that.
besides that: compressing the file with 7-zip would reduce filesize (sometimes) dramatically;)

2.) does anybody have a tracklist for C8B095 ingame music?

3.) to gain as much attention as possible without spamming to much: has anybody seen the german translation team?

For the up&download.. why not use torrent? Its made for that purpose. deploy big data massively in short time. i'd seed. and it legal, right?

by the way you would draw some attention via the tracker sites for ppl that do not already know this mod.

Current policy is that anyone is free to upload the file to a mirror site.

Some ISPs routinely block torrents or their trackers.

Even so, to continue using the http server as the "fallback" download mode, but to also set up a process to distribute via either an existing tracker or make one of our own is, to me, a better solution than just the http link. Or am I missing something?

<edit>
I realize that this is not the thread for such a discussion, but since people where already sorta on the topic, I thought I'd give my 2 ears (norwegian joke, directly translated, an ear is our monetary equivalent of a cent)

1) I presume that you are both using PC computers? This error happens if a Mac network game is attempted.
2) If you are sure that you are both running the same versions of the mod (with no add-ons) and still can't get it to work then better re-post this post in the multiplayer section. The guys there will likely be able to help you out.

There are two ways, one try extracting to Homeworld 2 data folder, if that don't work, extract to your desktop, and then drag and drop the suckers in data folder. Also it helps to keep a backup for mods and make a copy of the old data folder incase somethings goes wrong. Hope this helps.

Short answer: No.
Long Answer: The scripts used for "radiation" rely on the presence of the star_sol object; so editing out the star_sol object would disable the script.
